A toddler was among four passengers sent to an area hospital after a traffic crash Wednesday night on the South Side in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a traffic crash in the 7100 block of South State Street. Preliminary information indicated a silver sedan was traveling west on 71st Street when the driver disregarded a red light, striking a black Jeep headed north on State Street, police said.

A man was taken into custody at the scene.

The 22-year-old driver of the silver sedan was taken to St. Bernard Hospital for observation. A passenger of the sedan, also 22, was taken to UChicago Medicine with a punctured lung, and was listed in serious condition, police said.

The driver of the Jeep refused medical help but a passenger, a 22-year-old woman who suffered multiple injuries was taken to UChicago Medicine and listed in critical condition. A 1-year-old boy who was in a rear seat of the Jeep, was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital for observation, police said.

A weapon was recovered from the scene of the accident. The Major Accident Investigation Unit was investigating and charges  were pending.
