10-year-old girl killed in carbon monoxide poisoning in Albany Park

A 10-year-old girl was killed and 12-year-old girl was hospitalized due to carbon monoxide poisoning in Albany Park early Monday morning, according to a spokesperson from the Chicago Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to a call at 3024 West Gunnison Street, where upon arrival it was found that carbon monoxide levels were at “300 parts per million,” Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford said.

Two girls were found inside the home, a 10-year-old in cardiac arrest and a 12-year-old in serious condition. They were both rushed to the Swedish Covenant Hospital. The 10-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“With the cold upon us heating systems will be running full-time,” the Chicago Fire Department wrote today on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Please make sure your home is protected with CO alarms as required by law.”

People’s Gas said in a statement that the fire department is leading the investigation.

“We were asked to come to the address as part of standard protocol,” the company said. “There is no reason to believe the cause of the issue is related to any of our equipment.”
