Two people, including a Blue Island teen, have been charged in the Aug. 24, 2024, shooting death of a 15-year-old Markham boy, according to authorities.
Blue Island police said Tuesday that 23-year-old Rayshaun Pettit and a Blue Island 17-year-old were charged after an extensive investigation by detectives.
Pettit was ordered held following an initial court appearance Sunday, according to court records.
Noe Diaz, of the 3300 block of Willow Lane, was shot in the head in the 12600 block of South California Avenue in Blue Island, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
He died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled his death a homicide.
In his detention hearing, prosecutors said surveillance video captured the shooting and said Pettit, identified in a still shot from the video, admitted to firing at the 15-year-old, a court document showed.
It was a “coordinated, premeditated robbery in which the victim was lured to a location and ambushed,” according to the filing.
It’s alleged both Pettit and the 17-year-old fired shots into a vehicle, which Diaz and another person were in.
The detention filing stated that Pettit poses a threat to the safety of the public in general, and that “in light of the premeditated, violent and horrific nature of this offense” nothing short of jail pending trial could prevent him from getting or using a firearm.
