2 people hurt, 4 families displaced in Saturday fire in Elgin

Two people were injured and four families left homeless Saturday following a residential fire in Elgin’s 300 block of Jackson Street.

Fire crews dispatched about 4:40 p.m. to a two-story, four-unit multifamily dwelling arrived to find flames coming from two second-floor windows, an Elgin Fire Department news release said.

Two people — one a man who jumped from a second-floor window — were hurt and taken to Prime Healthcare St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the report said. All other residents were able to escape without harm.

Firefighters limited the fire to the unit where it started so it did not spread to the rest of the building. However, there was about $250,000 in damages and the structure deemed uninhabitable, officials said.

The displaced families were moved to temporary accommodations with help from Hanover Township Emergency Services. The source of the fire is believed to be accidental but remains under investigation.
