20 displaced , 1 injured in overnight fire at apartment building in Lawndale

Chicago police said 20 residents of a four unit apartment building were displaced after a fire broke out Thursday night in the Lawndale neighborhood.

A fire started shortly before 11:30 p.m. at a building in the 1200 block of South Independence Boulevard. Firefighters extinguished the blaze where a 59-year-old man was injured, and 20 people were displaced, police said.

The injured man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for chest pain and smoke inhalation, and was reported in good condition. Twenty residence which include five people under the age of 18, were displaced, police said.

Warming buses werew sent to the scene overnight. The cause of the fire was under investigation, police said.
