Skokie developer to build $1.2 million homes in Morton Grove

A Skokie developer is expected to break ground soon on six luxury single-family homes on Shermer Road just west of Harlem Avenue in Morton Grove. The Village Board voted unanimously on Tuesday (Feb. 13) to grant a final plat of subdivision to Varda and Company, LLC, to build the Ponto Collection on 1.6 acres at 9312 Shermer Road. William Byron launches Hendrick Motorsports’ 40th anniversary season with win in Daytona 500

William Byron launched Hendrick Motorsports’ 40th anniversary season by snapping the team’s nine-year Daytona 500 losing streak with his Monday win in the rain-postponed “Great American Race.” The last Hendrick driver to win the Daytona 500 was Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2014. The 26 year old from Charlotte, North Carolina is the sixth different driver to win the 500 for Rick Hendrick, the winningest team owner in NASCAR history who made his way to victory lane on the actual 40th anniversary of his first Cup win. Byron beat Hendrick teammate Alex Bowman as the race ended under one lap of caution.

Barrington School District 220 parents group wants crossing guards near railroad tracks

A group of Barrington 220 parents, many donning pink crossing guard vests, asked Barrington village leaders earlier this month to post permanent crossing guards at each of the village’s rail crossings after a Barrington High School student walking to school was recently struck and killed by a train. Roma Khan, a parent of two SD220 students, founded the new Barrington Student Safety Organization days after Marin Lacson, 17, a junior at BHS, was fatally struck by a Metra commuter train. Northbrook Pinewood Derby ‘This is one of my favorite events that we do’

This time of year is when Westminster Hall hosts time-honored Americana traditions at the Village Church of Northbrook. Feb. 17 was when Cub Scout Pack 463 staged its annual Pinewood Derby and coming on Saturday, March 2, the community is invited to the 68th annual Pancake Festival from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 1300 Shermer Road. On Saturday (Feb. 17), nearly 40 racers rolled 57 handmade pinewood derby cars down a 48 foot aluminum track. Racing participants included siblings, friends, parents or guardians of Scouts.
