After months of delay, a new migrant shelter for families is opening at the shuttered St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Portage Park later this month, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced late Friday. Johnson had said in January the city would not establish any new shelters amid a spat with Gov. JB Pritzker about the state’s role in directly providing housing for thousands of migrants who had arrived in Chicago in recent months and rising city costs. Merrillville plans to issue fines for excessive false alarm, police calls

Hotels and residences in Merrillville that have issues with their alarms getting set off constantly or that end up calling the police a lot may want to rethink their strategy upon a new town ordinance meant to curb those habits. The ordinance, approved by the Town Council’s Council Affairs committee April 2 and expected to pass the Town Council at its April 9 meeting, will allow all hotels in Merrillville three “false alarm” calls every three months, or per quarter, the ordinance reads. NIPSCO, consumer groups reach natural gas rate settlement

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. customers will see their natural gas bills go up again this summer, but not by as much as the utility wanted. The utility and groups opposed to the rate increase agreed recently that NIPSCO should get about 75$ of its original request NIPSCO had asked the state’s utility regulators for a 10.6% increase in its gas rates in October 2023.
