Gary man sentenced for shooting cousin in 2015

Keontaye Hunter admitted in court paperwork that he shot his 15-year-old cousin in the chest following a “childish” argument over $25 nearly a decade ago. He pleaded guilty Jan. 4 to Level 5 Felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury to the May 29, 2015 shooting. Hunter, now 25, of Gary, was 16 at the time. Judge Natalie Bokota sentenced him Friday to six months in Lake County Community Corrections — to the Kimbrough Work Release program, with an option to transfer to home detention. Northbrook Park District seeking nominees for induction into hall of fame

The Northbrook Park District is looking for nominations for athletes and volunteers who might deserve a spot in its Hall of Fame. According to a news release, more than 60 athletes and volunteers have been inducted since 1978 into the park district’s Hall of Fame, which consists of the Sports Hall of Fame and the Volunteer Hall of Fame. Hunters accused of poaching deer

Two Lake County men have been charged with a host of misdemeanors after the Indiana Department of Natural Resources caught them poaching deer. Conservation officers investigated the men after the department received a tip to its poacher hotline late last year, INDNR spokesman Alex Neel said in a release Friday. Both suspects — Ryan Jinkerson, 46, of Lowell, and Randy Kirk, 34, of Winfield — turned themselves in after officers filed the charges and issued arrest warrants, Neel said, though they each posted their $750 bond.
