Side Street Studio to receive $500,000 in Elgin TIF money to renovate downtown building

Side Street Studio Arts’ plans to renovate a historic South Grove Avenue building will receive $500,000 in Tax Increment Financing district funds for the first phase of construction. The Elgin City Council tentatively signed off last week on the financial support for the nonprofit art studio, which Councilwoman Tish Powell described as “a game changer in our town in terms of the arts scene, in terms of bringing folks to our community who haven’t been here, in terms of collaboration and engagement with folks. … I can’t overstate how that contributes to the vitality of our downtown.”

Lake County Sheriff’s vehicle fleet gets 20 new cars, 2 pickups as part of replacement program

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department has purchased 20 new police vehicles and two 4×4 pick-up trucks as part of its annual vehicle replacement program. Lake County Commissioners Wednesday took bids for paint on the vehicles — as well as outfitting them with lights, sirens and equipment — under advisement. After the meeting, Commissioners’ President Michael Repay, D-Hammond, said the vehicles were purchased through the state’s quantity purchase agreement (QPA) from Bloomington Ford-Lincoln.
