State reverses course in new diploma draft, gains widespread support

The Indiana Department of Education’s newest diploma redesign has gained the support of universities who said its previous draft wouldn’t meet their admission standards. Officials told the State Board of Education Wednesday the new draft adds significant updates that focus on rigor and flexibility for students to personalize their high school experience. The revised proposal includes one base diploma with minimum requirements for each student. The base diploma would require 42 credits, up from 40. It would go into effect with the Class of 2029. Former Harvey school official pleads guilty to taking $1.4 million worth of chicken wings

The food service director for a low-income school district in Harvey has been sentenced to nine years after pleading guilty to stealing $1.4 million worth of chicken wings, court records show. Vera Liddell, 68, who worked for Harvey School District 152 for more than 10 years, was charged with theft and operating a criminal enterprise in 2023, according to court records. On Aug. 9, she plead guilty receiving a nine year sentence and 18 months of mandatory supervised release.
