Evanston has paid out just over $5 million in reparations so far

Evanston’s Reparations Committee announced on Thursday that the city has spent $5.03 million on reparations for 203 individuals affected by unfair housing practices in Evanston from 1919 to 1969. The committee met in September to approve records of how the first round of reparations has been spent. Of the $5.03 million distributed to 141 people directly affected by unfair housing practices and 71 people who are descendants of those who did, $1.36 million will be spent on home improvement projects, mortgage assistance, or be used in the down payment for a home. 67-year-old man among 2 wounded in overnight shooting in Loop

A 67-year-old man was among two men wounded at different locations overnight when shots rang out in the Loop neighborhood, Chicago police said. Around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, two people were standing on the sidewalk at different spots in the first block of East Wacker Drive when they both were struck by gunfire, police said. The older man suffered a wound to the right thigh, and other victim, 24, was wounded to the right buttocks. Both victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and listed in good condition. No one was in custody and detectives were investigating.  

Two shot during street celebration in Edgewater

A man and a woman were shot early Saturday morning while participating in a street celebration in Edgewater, Chicago police said. At approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday, shots were fired by unknown offenders in the 5200 block of N Winthrop Avenue. A 44-year-old man was shot three times to his left leg, while a 38-year-old woman was shot in her lower back, according to police. Both victims were treated at Swedish Hospital, arriving in good condition, police said. No offenders have been taken into custody. Detectives are investigating the incident.

Man, 27, fatally wounded while passenger of vehicle Friday night in West Garfield Park

A 27-year-old man was fatally wounded Friday night while he was a passenger of a vehicle on the West Side in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, Chicago police said. Shortly before 11:15 p.m., the victim was a passenger of a vehicle in the 4700 block of West Lake Street when someone in a blue sedan opened fire, striking him to the chest, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.
