36-year-old man fatally wounded Wednesday night in West Garfield Park neighborhood

Chicago police responded to a call of a person shot Wednesday night in the West Garfield Park neighborhood and found a man lying on the ground.

The victim, 36, had suffered two gunshot wounds to the back in the 4000 block of West Carroll Avenue, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

He was identified as Edward Hemphil of the 4100 block of West Carroll Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

No one was in custody for the fatal shooting, and detectives were investigating.
