Officers on patrol in Portage Park overnight alerted the residents of a building to the smell of smoke, preventing injuries, officials said.
Shortly before 1:15 a.m., officers smelled smoke in the 4700 block of West Patterson Avenue and continued to investigate until finding a building with smoke coming out the roof, Chicago police said.
The officers alerted the residents and helped them evacuate until firefighters arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire. About seven residents exited the building and no injuries were reported.
