A pedestrian was killed Sunday in a hit-and-run in Skokie in the 7900 block of Crawford Avenue, according to Skokie police. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as a 78-year-old man who lived within a half mile of the crash.
Skokie police responded to the crash near the intersection of Crawford Avenue and Kirk Street on Oct. 27 at 3:59 p.m., according to Sergeant Brandi Shelton. She said the victim, Alfred Slivo, was crossing Crawford Avenue heading westbound when a dark-colored vehicle driving north struck him. The driver of the vehicle did not stay in the area, she said.
“To not compromise the investigation and in consideration of the decedent’s family, the information shared in the press release is the information available at this time,” Shelton said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the cause of death was multiple injuries from a minivan striking a pedestrian.
Shelton said the NORTAF MCAT (North Regional Major Crimes Task Force, Major Crash Assistance Team) was activated and is assisting the Skokie Police Department with the investigation.
Saturday’s crash was the third fatal crash in Skokie recently, according to Skokie police. A 27-year-old cyclist died three weeks after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Gross Point Road and Skokie Boulevard. A 37-year-old male pedestrian also died after being struck by two cars in the 3500 block of Oakton Street in August.
Safety improvements are expected to be implemented for a two mile stretch of Crawford Avenue for cyclists between Oakton Street and Golf Road, and construction is expected to begin in 2026, according to the village’s Communications and Community Engagement Director Patrick Deignan.
The public is asked to contact the Skokie Police Department at (847) 982- 5900 if they have information regarding the crash.
