Father of baby who died by child abuse detained, poses a threat, judge says

The father of a 5-day-old girl who died from injuries as a result of child abuse was ordered held in Cook County Jail following a hearing Wednesday at the Markham courthouse, according to a court filing.

The baby suffered skull fractures, rib fractures and bleeding around the brain, prosecutors said in asking that Kevon Taylor, 23, of Sauk Village, be held pending trial.

The girl, Kenzie Taylor, was brought by her father to UChicago Medicine at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey at 12:36 p.m. Feb. 9.

The baby’s mother had not been feeling well and was taken to the hospital the night of Feb. 7, according to a court filing. Other family members helped with the baby’s care from that point until shortly after 9 a.m. Feb. 9, according to the filing.

From about 9:15 a.m. Feb. 9 until the baby was brought to Ingalls, Kevon Taylor was sole caretaker of the child, according to the filing.

In ordering that Taylor be held, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Jerome Barrido said he poses a threat to the child’s mother as well as the baby’s grandparents, who had helped in watching the girl after the mother was hospitalized.

In turning over the care of the child to the father, the grandparents had not noticed anything wrong with the child, the judge wrote Wednesday in his detention order.

The infant, of the 2600 block of Marigold Drive, had been pronounced dead at the Harvey hospital shortly after 1 p.m. Feb. 9, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy showed the girl had died from multiple injuries related to child abuse, according to the office.
