Rental process for park pavilion, picnic space starts next week
The Naperville Park District will start accepting residents’ applications to rent pavilions and picnic space during the summer starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7.
Applications will be accepted from nonresidents starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14.
The park district offers rental space/pavilions at six area parks: DuPage River Park, Frontier Sports Complex-East, Knoch Knolls Park, Riverwalk Grand Pavilion, Seager Park and Wolf’s Crossing Community Park.
Rental requests must be made at least three weeks in advance and renters must be at least 21 years old. The summer schedule runs from June 1 to Aug. 31.

DuPage health department offering free kids’ dental screenings
The DuPage County Health Department will offer free dental screenings for children on Friday, March 1, as part of the “Give Kids A Smile” initiative with the American Dental Association.
Appointments are required and can be made by calling 630-221-7776. Screenings will be done at the county health department, 111 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.
In addition to the screenings, children also will receive oral health education and an oral healthcare kit, a news release said.
“Give Kids A Smile” day is a national initiative that began in 2003 to help provide dental services to underserved children. In the last eight years, the DuPage health department has provided more than 2,400 free dental procedures to 660 children as part of this event.
New help center allows residents to contact mayor, council
Naperville will begin using a new Help Center on Monday, March 4, that will improve residents’ ability to connect with elected officials.
The center provides more efficient email access to Mayor Scott Wehrli and Naperville City Council members through which requests, questions and feedback can be sent, according to a city news release.
City officials said this will offer faster response times, improved submission tracking, enhanced security and more transparency in communication. The center allows users to track the status of their submissions securely online, the release said.
To use the system, go to www.naperville.il.us and click on the “Help Center” option in the upper left corner.
Participants can create an account to track the submission’s status, but it is not required to send a submission. For more information, call 630-420-6018.
Local high school chess teams place in top 10 at state competition
Naperville-area chess teams placed in the top 10 at the state chess tournament held Feb. 9-10 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria.
Of the top teams, students from Naperville Central High School placed sixth, Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora placed seventh, the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora placed ninth and Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville placed 10th.
Also placing were Naperville North High School, 14th; Benet Academy in Lisle, 23rd; and Metea Valley High School in Aurora, 34th.
