Southland crime: Carjacking in Oak Lawn, pornography in New Lenox, and more

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Beecher

STRANGULATION ALLEGED: Christopher M. Kush, 50, 800 Joliet Highway, New Lenox, was charged Friday with aggravated domestic battery/strangulation following a Feb. 21 domestic call in unincorporated Beecher, according to Will County sheriff and court records online. New Lenox officers took Kush into custody at his home, police said.

Burbank

PROWLERS REPORTED: Neighbors checking nighttime noises at a home on Narragansett Avenue Feb. 17 sent two men fleeing, one on his hands and knees, police said. Officers responding found a lawn chair outside the home beneath an open window and, checking inside, found a dresser drawer partly open and the contents displaced, police said.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: Larry E. Caldwell, 64, Chicago, was charged with aggravated assault to a police officer after wielding a large pocket knife while fleeing during a Feb. 20 retail theft investigation in the 7600 block of Lacrosse Avenue, police said.

Crete Township

MAN SHOT: Tawanda D. Canady, 47, 25700 block of Nancy Street, Crete, was arrested a little after midnight Tuesday and accused of shooting a 41-year-old man in the stomach in that block, Will County sheriff’s police said. The victim, transported to a medical facility after deputies instituted life-saving procedures, said he had been trying to end a romantic relationship immediately prior to the shooting, sheriff’s police said. Canady faces charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated domestic battery and reckless discharge of a firearm, sheriff’s police said.

Evergreen Park

NO CUTS: A Chicago woman who punched a woman she believed had cut in line was arrested and accused of battery Feb. 15 at Circle K, 2635 87th St., police said. Prior to her arrest, Ariel L. Tarleton, 38, Chicago, exited her vehicle, stepped in front of the victim to prevent her from pumping gas and punched the victim several times in the face, police said.

ARMED CRIMINAL: Shyhiem Z. Atkinson, 29, Bolingbrook, was arrested and accused of being an armed habitual criminal after an officer recovered a live 9 mm bullet from him during a Feb. 17 traffic stop at 98th Street and Western Avenue, police said.

SQUAD HIT: Robert J. Williams, 31, Chicago, was arrested and accused of criminally damaging government property Feb. 18 at the Shell gas station, 2635 85th St., after driving into a squad car while attempting to flee in a stolen company sport utility vehicle, police said. The stolen vehicle was impounded, police said.

Homer Glen

ILLEGAL GUN: Dominic A. Chiarelli, 28, 12000 block of Longmeadow Lane, Homer Glen, was charged with aggravated battery/discharging a firearm after shooting a 25-year-old man in the back during an argument in that block, according to Will County sheriff’s police and court records online. The victim was treated at a medical facility for a nonlife-threatening injury, sheriff’s police said. Chiarelli was taken into custody at his home, where detectives recovered a 9 mm handgun, sheriff’s police said. Chiarelli is scheduled to appear at a March 11 preliminary hearing, according to court records.

Homewood

STOLEN VEHICLE: Keenan Bennett, 38, 800 block of 194th Street, Glenwood, was arrested and accused of possessing a stolen vehicle Feb. 6 in the 17800 block of Halsted Street after taking possession of an unoccupied delivery truck, police said. Midlothian officers saw him driving the vehicle and took him into custody, police said.

ILLEGAL GUN: Carl Johnson, 41, Indianapolis, Indiana, was arrested and accused of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon after officers recovered a loaded handgun from his floorboard during a Feb. 7 hit-run crash investigation in the 17500 block of Dixie Highway, police said. Johnson was also accused of drunken driving, driving on a suspended license, driving without insurance and illegally transporting cannabis in a motor vehicle, police said.

BATTERY: Robert Johnson Jr., 32, 16300 block of Spaulding Avenue, Markham, was arrested and accused of battery to a police officer Feb. 7 in the 18000 block of Park Avenue after poking an officer in the face as the officer responded to a complaint of a person threatening a bus driver, police said.

ILLEGAL GUN: Mya Rutledge, 23, Hammond, Indiana, was arrested and accused of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon Feb. 16 in the 17600 block of Halsted Street after displaying a handgun during an argument over a parking space, police said.

New Lenox

PORNOGRAPHY CHARGED: Timothy C. Mol, 45, is scheduled to appear at a March 7 preliminary hearing, charged with child pornography and taking surreptitious video of a person younger than 18, according to Will County court records online. Investigators discovered a hidden camera in a bathroom of Mol’s home containing unlawful recordings of two people, police said. Mol remains in the Will County jail, according to sheriff’s and court records.

Oak Lawn

CARJACKING CHARGE: Marvin Johnson, 22, Chicago, was arrested Feb. 22 at his home on a charge of aggravated vehicular hijacking, police said. Johnson allegedly demanded the car key from a motorist who was fueling his vehicle at about 5:30 a.m. Dec. 24 at the Shell gas station, 10601 Cicero Ave., police said. The victim, who was not physically hurt, threw the key to Johnson and fled into the gas station, police said.

ROBBERY: A man in his 20s told store security he had a gun Feb. 22 before exiting Home Depot, 4060 95th St., with a security safe selling for $129, police said.

BATTERY: A hearing-impaired motorist told police that he was traveling east on 95th Street between 54th and Central avenues Feb. 21 when an erratically driving motorist in his 30s curbed his vehicle, shouted at him and punched him in the face. The other motorist then followed the victim, got him to stop again and punched him and his car. The victim said he last saw the other motorist as he turned north onto Raymond Avenue.

Orland Park

ILLEGAL GUN: Kalisha C. Lockhart, 40, 13000 block of Wood Street, Blue Island, was arrested during a Feb. 16 traffic stop in the 15800 block of LaGrange Road and subsequently charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the officer’s finding of a loaded .25 caliber handgun in a purse on the passenger seat, police said.

Palos Heights

IDENTITY THEFT: Three people were arrested and charged with using information from mail they stole to steal victims’ identities, police said. Kelly Roth, 27, Palos Heights, Ryan Scanlan, 29, Chicago Ridge, and Franklin Buttron, 38, Worth, are charged with engaging in a continuing crimes enterprise and aggravated identity theft/victim over 60, police said. The trio stole mail from south suburban mailboxes in December and January and then used information to forge checks, which they deposited at banks, police said, saying Roth, Scanlan and Buttron also used victims’ debit/credit card information to make retail purchases. A Jan. 25 arrest by Crestwood officers led to the identification of the group and officers subsequently recovered stolen mail at the three homes while executing search warrants, police said.

Park Forest

KNIFE ALLEGED: Daquise D. Reddick, 37, 100 block of Sycamore Drive, Park Forest, was booked into the Will County jail Monday on an accusation of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to sheriff’s records online. Reddick battered an individual and threatened her with a knife during a Sunday domestic disturbance, police said. Crete officers apprehended Reddick at Route 394 and Steger Road on a temporary arrest warrant related to the incident, police said.
