A Mundelein woman told police, “I’m sorry,” before laying on the floor and directing officers to the nearby body of her boyfriend, who was dead from a stab wound, a Lake County prosecutor said at a Wednesday hearing.
After hearing details about the death of Michael Murphy, 53, Judge Christopher Lombardo ordered Jeannette Crespo detained on first-degree murder charges.
Assistant State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano told the judge that Crespo, 44, answered the door when police arrived at the apartment she and Murphy shared in the 1400 block of Downing Place. The police were dispatched after receiving reports of a disturbance early Monday.
Officers found Murphy’s body on the floor, covered with a blanket with a knife nearby.
Crespo, the prosecutor said, told police she had had “an episode,” and that she suffered from anxiety issues. Murphy had been stabbed at least five times, Mandujano said, including once in the heart.
Mandujano told the judge that the proof was evident that Crespo had killed Murphy. He also said she would present a danger to the community if released to await trial.
Crespo does not have a criminal record, though Mundelein police had been to their apartment on previous occasions for domestic issues, Mandujano said.
Crespo is due back in court on March 21.
