Merrillville man killed, one injured in Hammond weekend shooting

A Merrillville man is dead and another person was injured during a family argument that ended with a shooting early Saturday morning.

Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said in a release Sunday that police around 4:30 a.m. March 2 were sent to a residence in the 1900 block of Warwick Avenue for a disturbance. There, they found two individuals with gunshot wounds, Kellogg said.

One of the victims sustained a shoulder injury and was taken to an area hospital for treatment, Kellogg said, but the second one – identified by police as well as the Lake County Coroner’s office as Charles Stokes, 21 — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hammond detectives are still investigating, but police emphasized the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no immediate danger to the community, Kellogg said. Details will be released as they’re available, he said.

Hammond Detective Sergeant Shawn Ford is leading the investigation. Anyone with additional information relevant to this case is urged to contact him at the Hammond Police Department at (219) 852-2998.
