North Chicago man found guilty of murder in shooting death of 14-year-old

A North Chicago man has been found guilty of murder in the 2022 fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy, according to Lake County prosecutors.

A jury returned a guilty verdict Friday night in the trial of Alraum Williams, 19. He was found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of Lavon’ta Brown.

Brown, 14, was fatally shot on May 15, 2022, in the 1000 block of Jackson Street in North Chicago.

Authorities said a group of people inside a car pulled up to Brown and a friend, who were on foot, and began shooting at them. Brown was struck in the chest and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police said Williams, and his brother Amireon, were among the group inside the car.

Prosecutors said surveillance footage and testimony from other people in the car showed that Alraum Williams was in the rear passenger seat. Gunfire came from that part of the car, police said.

The vehicle fled after the shooting, but crashed in front of the Waukegan Home Depot on Belvidere Road. The occupants fled in different directions, and some were arrested inside the store, police said.

The trial began Tuesday and lasted four days, going to the jury Friday, prosecutors said. Williams faces up to 75 years in prison. He has a sentencing hearing scheduled for April.

His brother is also charged with murder and has a May trial date.
