The Kane County Forest Preserve District is inviting area residents to take part in a virtual program focusing on bobcats in north-central Illinois on April 11 to be led by Ellen Audia, a Ph.D student at Southern Illinois University.
Those taking part in the program, which will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom, will learn about the history of bobcats in the state, recent bobcat recolonization of northern Illinois and more.
Research being conducted by Audia and her scientific advisors is helping the Illinois Department of Natural Resources understand bobcat population dynamics and develop strategies for managing the animals in Illinois, according to a press release from the Kane County Forest Preserve District.
Advance registration is required for the free program. Zoom links will be emailed the day prior to the event. To register, call 630-444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com.
Geneva to offer free yard waste event
Geneva residents can get a head start on their spring yard work with a program offering free collection of yard waste during the last two weeks in March.
The free yard waste disposal is part of the city’s refuse contract with Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS). Yard waste bags set out with garbage will be picked up for free – no refuse sticker required – on residents’ regular pickup days during the weeks of March 18 and 25, city officials said in a press release.
Yard waste should be placed in Kraft brown paper bags and should not weigh more than 50 pounds, officials said. While LRS strongly prefers the use of bags, residents who pay for a designated LRS yard waste cart also can use that cart during the free collection period, according to the release.
Accepted yard waste items to be picked up during the program include grass clippings, vines, weeds, leaves, plants, pinecones, small branches and garden waste.
Starting in April, a refuse sticker must be affixed to each bag as part of the city’s regular yard waste program, which runs through November, officials said.
Tree limbs exceeding one-inch in diameter should be disposed of as part of the city’s monthly brush pickup, which is scheduled to start in April, according to the release.
