An East Chicago man faces charges after he allegedly shot a woman in a backyard, then took her to the hospital, documents allege.
Jamille Walker, 30, was charged Tuesday with aggravated battery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
He is in custody, held on a $50,000 or $5,000 cash surety bond. His next court date is March 20.
East Chicago Police responded March 11 around 4:44 a.m. to a residence for a reported shooting.
Witnesses heard a woman screaming and saw a vehicle leave, then come back.
Walker told the officers to come in, saying he didn’t know what happened. A silver “revolver-type pistol” with a spent bullet cartridge was on the kitchen counter.
He gave inconsistent stories, saying he hadn’t left the house, then said he took the shot woman to the hospital, then said he didn’t take her.
She was possibly shot outside, but he denied he did it. Officers saw blood on his left hand. He was arrested.
The woman was shot in the upper chest and left elbow.
Investigators noted the woman also appeared to lie to protect Walker. She claimed at the hospital she was getting out of a Lyft from a relative’s house when shots were fired.
She then claimed Walker thought she was an “intruder,” the affidavit states.
“Mommy and daddy were fighting,” their daughter, 3, told police.
Walker said he left a friend’s house in Munster and found the woman shot in the backyard. He denied shooting her, but admitted he picked up a gun and “shell casing” and took it to the kitchen.
