Almost 90 children involved in Scouting recently earned their law merit badge during a recent visit to the Lake County Courthouse.
Scouts have been coming to the courthouse since 1997, when the merit badge program began. Almost 1,500 youths have participated over the years.
This year’s merit badge program took place on March 2. The Scouts were welcomed by Lake County Circuit Judge Joseph V. Salvi, and associate judges Daniel L. Jasica and Christopher B. Morozin. The employees of the 19th Judicial Circuit helped organize the event.
After being greeted and receiving an orientation, the Scouts divided into groups to receive a courthouse tour, a tour of the Lake County Coroner’s Office and a sheriff’s office demonstration featuring Deputy Roxana Stancioiu and her K9 partner, Drako.
During lunch, the group heard presentations from the judges about the law and the process of becoming a lawyer, and then watched a mock trial. Afterward, the Scouts received their merit badges and certificates.
The program is operated with the support of employees of the 19th Judicial Circuit, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County Coroner’s Office, The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Lake County Public Defender’s Office, the Lake County Circuit Clerk’s Office, Lake County Adult Probation, and in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America- Northeast Illinois Council.

Attempted carjacking
Round Lake Beach police arrested two armed Kenosha, Wisconsin men this month on attempted carjacking charges.
Cadin A. Ziccarelli, 19, and Timothy L. Reed, 21, were charged with attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking and weapons counts after they were arrested on March 7, police said.
Officers responded to the 900 block of Rollins Road at around 12:45 p.m. for a report of the attempted carjacking. After failing in their bid to carjack a motorist, the two suspects fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, police said.
At 2:08 p.m. officers saw two men matching the description of the suspects walking along the aisles of a parking lot in the 700 block of East Rollins. The men fled, but the officer was able to take them into custody after a brief chase.
The victim identified Ziccarelli and Reed as the would-be carjackers, authorities said. Police said they confiscated two guns during the arrest.
Face slashed
An Antioch man was taken into custody after he slashed a family member across the face with a knife during a domestic dispute, according to the sheriff’s office.
The attack took place on Wednesday at around 12:25 a.m. in the 21200 block of Illinois Route 173, police said.
Police said Aaron Locklear, 54, attacked a male relative, 45, during a dispute. The victim suffered significant facial injuries and was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.
Locklear, police said, used a knife with an eight-inch blade to slash the relative.
He has been charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Police said alcohol may have played a role in the attack.
Coke, gun seized
The sheriff’s office Special Investigations Group concluded an operation this month with the arrest of a Vernon Hills man on drug and weapons charges.
Dentri J. Henning, 34, was taken into custody at his residence in the 300 block of Farmingdale Circle on March 7. SIG officers seized more than 30 grams of cocaine and a semi-automatic pistol.
Henning was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and drug counts, police said.
“Yet again, our Special Investigations Group has worked diligently to apprehend someone trafficking guns and drugs in our community. I am proud of everything they do to keep guns out of the wrong hands and drugs out of our community,” Sheriff John Idleburg said.
