Dax, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office police dog who was forced into retirement after a recent injury on the job, has died, authorities said.
The German shepherd was euthanized Friday, just two days after he was recognized by the department in a retirement ceremony, the sheriff’s office said.
Dax had served the department for nine years, with Deputy Ray Forlenza acting as his handler.
The dog was injured on March 3 as he and Forlenza apprehended a suspect. Dax was initially paralyzed in his hindquarters, and veterinarians determined that he was suffering from a spinal disc condition.
Although Dax regained the use of his legs through therapy, it was determined that he would not be able to return to duty. Despite some initial progress, Dax continued to be in pain and his condition deteriorated, Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said. Forlenza made the difficult decision to have Dax humanely euthanized.
“K-9 Dax will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we are incredibly saddened by his passing,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “K-9 Dax will be remembered for the lives he saved, violent offenders he apprehended, and drugs he kept from being distributed in our community. Please keep the Forlenza family in your thoughts and prayers.”
