The Waubonsee Community College Foundation will host its fourth annual Walk, Run and Win 5K and 10K fundraising event at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1, on the college’s Sugar Grove campus.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Waubonsee Foundation Scholarship Program.
Each year, the foundation raises funds to provide student scholarships. The foundation provided 364 scholarship awards totaling almost $363,000 for the 2023-24 academic year, according to a press release about the upcoming event.
Registration fees for the 5K are $35, while registration fees for the 10K are $45, with discounts for Waubonsee students, alumni and children 12 years old and younger.
Race participants will receive an event T-shirt, a food truck voucher and sponsor giveaways.
Along with the 5K and 10K races, the event will feature food trucks and a touch-a-truck experience which will offer a closer look at specialized vehicles and public safety equipment.

Walk to focus on Batavia history
Batavia history will take center stage during the Discover Historic Batavia Walk set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19.
The walk, to be led by Batavia Mayor Jeffery Schielke, will begin at the entrance to the Batavia Public Library at 10 S. Batavia Ave. From there, the walk will proceed past a few of the Discover Historic Batavia signs in the downtown Batavia historic district, and conclude with refreshments at the Batavia Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave.
The walk is free and open to the public.
The Batavia Historical Society, in collaboration with the Batavia Park District’s Depot Museum, Batavia Public Library and the city of Batavia, created the 10 Discover Historic Batavia plaques. The markers and accompanying website are funded through a grant from the Dunham Foundation.
The markers highlight significant events in the 189-year history of Batavia.

Program to look at stamp collecting
The St. Charles Public Library will host a stamp collecting program at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in the Huntley Community Room at the library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. in St. Charles.
The program will be presented by St. Charles resident Gary Danzer, who is a lifelong enthusiast who got into stamp collecting “as a way to see the world” without ever leaving home, according to a press release about the event.
Danzer will share how to get started collected stamps, what supplies you’ll need and how to appraise your family’s old stamp collection.

Health department sets training session in Aurora
As part of National Stop the Bleed Month this May, the Kane County Health Department will hold a free community training session on Wednesday, May 15, aimed at giving citizens the skills and confidence needed to save lives in emergency bleeding situations.

Stop the Bleed is a nationwide campaign initiated to address one of the most preventable causes of death – uncontrolled bleeding, according to a press release about the upcoming session.
Whether it’s a household injury, workplace accident or severe emergency, knowing how to control bleeding can make the difference between life and death, officials said.
“Severe bleeding is something that can happen in everyday accidents and emergencies, and having the knowledge and skills to respond quickly can be life-saving,” said Kane County Health Department Executive Director Michael Isaacson in the release.
“The training is simple, it can be learned by anyone and it can make a crucial difference in an emergency,” he said.
The training will be conducted by certified instructors and includes hands-on practice, according to the release.
Naper Settlement announces Naper Nights concert lineup
The upcoming Naper Nights summertime concert series at Naper Settlement in Naperville will feature tributes to legendary pop, rock, disco and country music artists and performances by nationally known artists A.J. Croce and Samantha Fish.
Tickets for the six shows, all of which start at 6 p.m., can be purchased at www.napersettlement.org/236/Naper-Nights-Concerts. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for ages 4 to 12.
