Kane County Forest Preserve District commissioners took the rare step this week of authorizing condemnation proceedings against an 8-acre stretch of abandoned rail line owned by the Union Pacific Railroad. The move would come closer to closing a gap in the Great Western Trail between Dean Street in St. Charles and where it picks up again near the Fox River.
