SUV crashes into Fannie May candy store in Lincolnwood

A 71-year-old Lincolnwood woman crashed her SUV into the front facade of a Fannie May candy store building in the suburb Tuesday afternoon, Lincolnwood police and fire officials said.

Neither the driver nor the sole employee inside the store was injured, they said.

Lincolnwood Fire Chief Barry Liss said his department responded just after 2 p.m. and neither the driver nor store employee required paramedic assistance.

“There was no indication of driver impairment,” said Lincolnwood Deputy Police Chief Travis Raypole, who indicated a witness saw the driver enter the candy shop’s parking lot. “She wasn’t sure if she hit the gas or the brake when she was pulling into the parking lot.”

Fire companies surveyed the building to look for any hazardous utility disruptions  after the crash, Liss said, as well as observe structural conditions. A building department employee was set to talk to the building owner about work needed to repair the building, he said.

A blue covering sealed part of the building’s front facade Wednesday after the SUV was towed out.
