A North Chicago man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the 2021 killing of a former girlfriend and was sentenced to 30 years in prison, according to Lake County prosecutors and court records.
Montreal Porter, 51, fatally shot Glenda Cramer-Cayson, authorities said.
Porter and the woman both lived in the Prairie View Court apartments, according to reports. Police responded there on March 2, 2021, at about 6:40 p.m. and found the victim, 47, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
She was brought to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police arrested Porter, who they said had previously been in a relationship with the woman. The two had been in an argument, and the woman ran off but stumbled and fell outside the apartment building. Porter then shot her several times, police said.
“Domestic violence is one of our society’s most serious problems,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in a statement. “Throughout this devastating case, we stayed in close contact with the victim’s family and they were consulted extensively during the plea negotiation.
“We will continue to support them,” he said. “This offender was 48 at the time of the offense and will spend decades away from the community.”
Porter had been held in jail since the shooting. That time will be credited against the 30-year prison sentence, which must be served in full, authorities said.
