A North Carolina-based grocer is planning to open a store this fall in the former Dom’s Kitchen & Market location in Lincoln Park, the company confirmed Thursday.
The Fresh Market has posted listings for nine managerial roles at the 2730 N. Halsted location, including jobs overseeing the grocery, produce, bakery and meat and seafood departments, as first reported by Crain’s.
The job listings, dated Tuesday and Wednesday, suggest The Fresh Market plans to hire for 70 to 100 positions in Lincoln Park.
A spokesperson for The Fresh Market confirmed it planned to open a store this fall, saying the company aimed “to deliver a familiar yet elevated shopping experience” in Lincoln Park.
“We understand how cherished Dom’s was to the local community, and we are committed to providing an exceptional shopping experience that honors this legacy,” the company said.
The Fresh Market operates supermarkets across 22 states; its four existing Illinois stores are all suburban.
Dom’s Lincoln Park, along with Dom’s Old Town and 33 Foxtrot locations, shuttered abruptly in April five months after the companies announced plans to merge. Some former workers said they found out they were out of their jobs in the middle of their shifts, and employees swiftly filed several lawsuits alleging violations of the state and federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Acts. The state and federal WARN Acts require large employers to give 60 days’ notice of certain mass layoffs or closures.
Outfox Hospitality, the parent company of Dom’s and Foxtrot, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Delaware in May. In court documents, the company estimated it would have no funds to pay out unsecured creditors after paying out administrative costs.
Foxtrot’s assets, including the brand and its intellectual property, were purchased at auction by New York investment firm Further Point Enterprises for $2.2 million. Earlier this month, Foxtrot founder Mike LaVitola — who had not served as the company’s CEO since early 2023 — said he planned to reopen about a dozen Foxtrot locations with the backing of Further Point, starting with the Gold Coast and Old Town locations in Chicago. LaVitola told the Tribune he hoped to hire back former Foxtrot staff when possible.
According to The Fresh Market’s website, multi-brand retail conglomerate Cencosud owns two-thirds of the company’s shares, while private equity giant Apollo Global Management and “other shareholders” control the remaining one-third of shares.
