Gary man gets probation for shooting daughter’s boyfriend

A Gary man was sentenced to three years probation Tuesday after admitting he drunkenly shot his daughter’s boyfriend in the arm in November 2019.

Vashawn D. King, 49, pleaded guilty in May to battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony.

Deputy Prosecutor Milana Petersen spoke briefly.

Defense lawyer John Cantrell said it happened during a “really bad day.”

Hammond Police responded at 8 p.m. on Nov. 20, 2019, to an apartment on the 3800 block of 169th Street.

A probable cause affidavit states King, his “female friend,” his daughter, and the daughter’s boyfriend were there with the daughter’s kids, aged 4 and 1.

King said the daughter’s boyfriend was not “good for her.” They argued and King picked her up and slammed her on the ground.

The boyfriend grabbed her to get the kids to leave.

As the woman was looking for her keys, King managed to get a gun, load it and shoot the other man in the right forearm, according to the affidavit.

The woman learned King was her father only two months earlier, court records state.

The case was before Judge Samuel Cappas.
