A St. Charles man and his dog were rescued from the Fox River near Batavia’s dam early Wednesday, officials said.
Batavia police officers found the man, 36, holding his dog and hugging a concrete wall near the east bank of the Fox River just south of the dam, according to a news release from the city of Batavia. Officials said in the release that the man’s dog had jumped into the river, so he dived in to save it.
However, the man ended up standing in chest-deep water with strong currents, so he was unable to get out of the river, the release said.
A friend, who was there at the time, called police at around midnight, officials said.
The man and his dog were rescued by the combined efforts of the Batavia Police Department, the Batavia Fire Department and the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, according to the release.
Officials said law enforcement used ropes to lift the man and his dog over the concrete wall that had trapped them in the water.
The man and his dog were not injured, and they refused medical attention, so they were released at the scene, officials said.
