A suspect in killing of a Round Lake Beach teen has been taken into custody, police say

A suspect is in custody for the shooting death this week of a teenage girl in Round Lake Beach, Lake County authorities said Friday.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force said the suspect was taken into custody at his residence and that a firearm was found there.

So far, no charges have been filed in the death of Valeria Rodriguez, 15, who was killed when a bullet fired from outside her residence struck her in the torso.

The task force has not released the identity of the suspect. The group said the person of interest was identified in the course of the investigation, and that enough information was generated to support the issuance of a search warrant of the person’s residence.

The task force said the suspect remains in custody.

Rodriguez was inside her house in the 1500 block of Cherokee Drive at around 10 p.m. Wednesday when she was struck by gunfire.

Police said the shot that hit the girl was fired from outside and was probably a stray round. Rodriguez, police said, is not believed to have been targeted.
