Hammond woman sentenced to probation in plea deal after hitting boyfriend with hammer; kicking cops

A Hammond woman got three years probation Friday in a plea deal for hitting her boyfriend in the head with a hammer.

Eva Santiago, 35, pleaded guilty in two different cases in May to Level 6 felony intimidation, misdemeanor domestic battery; and Level 6 felony criminal confinement.

Her lawyer Mark Gruenhagen said in court Santiago had “the keys to her future” and he strongly believed she would stay out of trouble.

Court documents show her then-boyfriend said Santiago accused him of cheating, then “chased” him around a garage and hit him in the head with a hammer on Aug. 28, 2021, on the 2900 block of W. 21st Ave. in Gary.

She then smashed two of his car windows.

Cops found her inside the man’s home and told her to leave. She argued with them. When they tried to arrest her, she kicked two cops while in one handcuff, according to an affidavit.
