Man, 19, charged for having gun suspected in Round Lake Beach teen’s slaying

Authorities have charged a man who they say possessed the handgun linked to the fatal shooting death of a 15-year-old girl inside her Round Lake Beach home earlier in the week.

Shorbonia Poole, Jr., 19, of Round Lake Beach, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony, according to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

After serving a search warrant at Poole’s home Friday, investigators recovered evidence that included a semi-automatic handgun they said was consistent with a shell casing found outside Valeria Rodriguez’s home, Lake County officials said in a news release.

Additional criminal charges were possible pending the release of more forensic information, authorities said.

Poole made an initial appearance before a Lake County judge on Saturday, where he was scheduled to return on Wednesday for a detention hearing, according to court records.

Valeria was inside her house in the 1500 block of Cherokee Drive at around 10 p.m. Wednesday when she was struck by gunfire. It’s unclear whether she was the intended target.
