Driving on Randall Road during rush a lesson in frustration
Anyone who has traveled on Randall Road between Geneva and Lake in the Hills in beautiful (but congested) Kane County is surely aware the trip can be taxing on the nerves, especially during peak hours.
Unfortunately, I was forced to go from Elgin to St. Charles recently for a 3:45 p.m. doctor’s appointment. Luckily, there were no complications other than the slow pace of traffic. It actually could’ve been far worse considering it’s summer and the height of the construction season.
I was back on the road by 4:30 p.m. and by then the cars were backed up solidly between Highland Avenue to the north and Route 64 to the south. I was beginning to daydream about having a helicopter instead of a car so that I could hover high above the congestion.
Making matters far worse, I was very hungry and every time the car came to an abrupt stop, I breathed in the unmistakable aroma of food.
Even with my allergies, I could easily identify the smell of charbroiled burgers, fire-roasted pizza, tacos, Asian carry-out and all the usual staples of a fast-food diet: hot dogs, Italian beefs, gyros and, of course, chicken wings. It was almost enough to make this grown man cry.
So, a word of warning to anyone contemplating a future trip on Randall Road, keep your windows rolled up and your GPS tuned to alternate travel routes. After all, life is much too short to be both mentally fatigued and famished in the same afternoon.

Central Kane LWV planning candidate forums before election
As the general election season is in full swing, the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County is in the process of scheduling forums for area candidates in contested races for Kane County, the Illinois General Assembly and U.S. Congress.
Forums are designed to provide a safe space for candidates to share their views on issues of importance to the voting public. The League of Women Voters strives to promote an opportunity for information to be presented in a nonpartisan, neutral setting that benefits the voting public.
A candidate forum can clearly be seen as a job interview. Campaign stops, glad handing, ads, flyers and stump speeches do not serve the same purpose.
The forums will be held at Batavia City Hall. They will be open to the public and will follow established League processes and rules. BATV will air the forums on its YouTube channel and they will be available after the forums on our website, lwvckcil.com, and on the Illinois Voter Guide website, illinoisvoterguide.org.
Please watch for upcoming information on specific races and forums in the future.
