Antioch police are crediting the alert actions of law enforcement along with the community response for the prompt arrests made after a shooting last week.
D’Angelo Conver, 20, of Antioch, remained in the Lake County jail Monday where he is being held without bond on felony weapons charges. A 17-year-old youth was also being held at the county juvenile detention center.
In addition, police said they had taken three other people into custody following an exchange of gunfire between two groups that happened at 12:43 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Hillside and Harden.
Antioch police said two groups had met there for a pre-arranged fight to settle an ongoing dispute. Once the fight began, though, it mushroomed and members of the groups exchanged gunfire.
Police arrived and noted a blood trail. They reached out to area hospitals and discovered a 23-year-old man had come to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with a gunshot wound to an arm.
Meanwhile, a Lake County sheriff’s deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description of one involved in the shooting and was able to stop the car, which led to the arrest of several suspects, police said.
A search warrant was conducted Thursday at a residence in the 400 block of Illinois Route 173, and police said they confiscated two “ghost guns,” including one with a 50-round magazine that had been converted to automatic fire. Ghost guns are firearms that do not have a serial number.
“This type of crime is not tolerated in Antioch,” Mayor Scott Gartner said. “I am grateful for the swift actions of our police department and supporting agencies. Their commitment to justice has made our community safer and shown the strength of our law enforcement partnerships.
“I look forward to seeing those arrested prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.
Police Chief Geoff Guttschow thanked area police agencies that assisted Antioch police.
“The fast response and thorough investigation by the Antioch Police Department and our partner agencies led to the quick apprehension and charges against the individuals responsible for this incident,” he said. “As crimes such as what happened in our community occur throughout the suburbs, leveraging the resources and knowledge of our investigative teams results in arrests and safer communities.”
Several people called 911 to report the gunfire, and those calls helped police to respond promptly, the chief said.
