Charges pending against security guard who fired at group attacking on South Side: police

Charges were pending Wednesday against a security guard who Chicago police said shot and injured a man who was part of a group that attacked him Tuesday morning in the Chatham neighborhood.

The guard, who had a concealed carry license, was working at a strip mall in the 100 block of West 87th Street around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when he got into an argument with a “large” group, police said.

The argument escalated and became physical and the security guard had his finger broken before he shot and wounded a 28-year-old man in the wrist and ankle, according to police.

The man was taken in serious condition to University of Chicago Hospital and his condition was stabilized there, police said. No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

On Wednesday, a police spokesperson said the guard was taken into custody after the shooting and that criminal charges were pending against him.
