15-year-old Markham boy among five south suburban shooting deaths over long weekend

A 15-year-old Markham boy was among five people shot to death over the long Labor Day weekend in the south suburbs, according to authorities.

Noe Diaz, of the 3300 block of Willow Lane, was shot in the head Friday in the 12600 block of South California Avenue in Blue Island, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He died at 11 a.m. Friday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled his death a homicide.

Blue Island police are continuing to investigate, but could not provide more information Tuesday, according to Tom Wogan, city administrator.

A homicide Friday in Robbins, as well as other shootings, prompted the village to cancel its annual Back to School Festival and Parade, according to the village’s mayor.

Malcolm Mathews, 35, of the 13700 block of South Pulaski Road in Robbins, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene at 11:36 a.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled the death a homicide.

in a letter to residents, Robbins Mayor Darren Bryant said that along with the homicide and other shootings, his office and police had received “an abundance of communication about threats that jeopardize the public safety of our residents.”

“With these threats, the logistics of the parade present significant challenges to manage and control,” the mayor wrote.

The village could not immediately provide more information about the homicide or other shootings.

The medical examiner’s office also reported the shooting death of a 30-year-old Naperville man in Harvey on Saturday.

Gregory Anthony Gordon Jr., of the 800 block of Benedetti Drive, was shot in the chest in the 14700 block of Vine Avenue, according to the office.

He was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. Saturday at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the office.

The office also reported the shooting death of a 24-year-old Sauk Village woman, Emauni Ryhane, in Chicago on Saturday.

Ryhane, of the 1600 block of 216th Street, suffered a gunshot wound to the head in the 1500 block of East 95th Street, according to the office.

Police said she was in a vehicle traveling on 95th Street when someone in a silver sport utility vehicle began firing at about 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

She was pronounced dead shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday at University of Chicago Medical Center.

The medical examiner’s office also reported the shooting death of a 53-year-old man from Buffalo, N.Y., in Harvey on Sunday.

According to the office, Earl Howard suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the 15200 block of Ashland Avenue and was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. Saturday at Ingalls Hospital. His death was ruled a homicide.
