Aurora City Council to vote on $1 million contract for work on three bridges

The Aurora City Council is set to vote on about a $1 million contract for work on three bridges in the city during the end of 2024 and into 2025.

The $1.08 million contract would be awarded to Elgin-based Martam Construction, Inc. Aldermen placed it on the consent agenda for next week’s regular City Council meeting, so it is likely to pass.

The three bridges involved in the contract would be the High Street Bridge, the Wood Street Bridge and the Ohio Street Bridge. All three bridges go over the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe tracks.

The High Street Bridge would get the most work, on expansion joints, and with structural concrete repairs at curbs, parapets, piers and abutments. There also would be some minor steel painting.

The Wood Street Bridge would have pavement connectors replaced, and minor sidewalk repairs. The Ohio Street Bridge would have pavement connectors replaced, minor curb and gutter work and sidewalk repairs.

The city inspects and maintains 33 bridges on the local street network, city officials said. The bridges are inspected according to Federal Highway Administration National Bridge Inspection standards.

Three bids were received for the bridge work, and Martam was the lowest bidder.

City officials said that if the contract is approved construction would begin in September and may continue into 2025, depending on weather and coordination with the railroad.
