The Chicago White Sox are closing in on matching the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses in modern-day Major League Baseball history.
The ’62 expansion Mets went 40-120 in their first season. The Sox are 33-113 — seven shy of tying the mark. Those 113 losses are a franchise record.
The Sox need to go 10-6 in their final 16 games to avoid drawing even with the Mets.
The American League record for most losses in a season belongs to the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who went 43-119.
Latest loss: 5-0 to the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday
Nicky Lopez looped a single to left field with two outs in the third inning Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Luis Robert Jr. followed with another single to left, and Lopez raced to third base to give the White Sox runners on the corners as they attempted to rally from down a run against the Cleveland Guardians.
That’s as close as the team came to scoring. They were shut out for the 17th time this season in loss No. 113.
