CHS 2025 National Merit Commended Students

Seven Chesterton High School (CHS) students have been named 2025 National Merit Commended Students. The students who have achieved this honor are: Emmalise Adcock; Nicholas Carpentier; Quinn Fleming; Savannah Grant; Samuel Macker; Alaina McGrogan; and Carmen Thomas. These students are part of a select group of about 34,000 Commended Students across the nation who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2025 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, their performance on the 2023 PSAT exam places them among the top 50,000 students nationwide.

NEO launches outreach for prospective students

Neighbors’ Educational Opportunities (NEO), a regional hub for high school completion opportunities, will offer opportunities for prospective students to learn about NEO’s New Vistas High School and Adult Education programs. Both programs specialize in individualized attention and effective career pathways for students on their journey to completing high school or earning their equivalency diploma. NEO will host daily open enrollment sessions from 8 to 10 a.m., 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at its site, 5201 U.S. Highway 6, Portage. No appointment is needed. A free public high school open to all Indiana residents, New Vistas offers smaller class sizes, flexible schedules and multiple paths to a Core 40 diploma. NIHPA presents fall festival, antique equipment show

Northern Indiana Historical Power Association (NIHPA) will hold its 48th Annual Fall Harvest Festival and Antique Equipment Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Sunset Hill Farm County Park, 775 N Meridian Road, Valparaiso. Admission is $10 per person. Children under 12 are admitted for free with a paid adult. Those in the military or older than 65 are $5 per person. Exhibits and activities will include farm animals; Kiddie Tractor Pull; antique truck and car show; Cedar Lake Farmers Market; Illiana Garden Railway Society; wagon rides; food vendors; a Saturday night pork chop dinner; and a craft and flea market. State, local officials join to host Fall Fest

State Rep. Vernon G. Smith, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, Gary Councilman Dwight A. Williams, County Councilman Charlie Brown, Sheriff Oscar Martinez, County Commissioner Kyle Allen, Calumet Twp. Trustee Kimberly Robinson and County Assessor LaTonya Spearman will join forces to sponsor the Fourth Annual Fall Fest. The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in front of the Glen Theater, 20 W. Ridge Road, Gary. There will be vendors with giveaways, free school supplies, free food and drinks, four bounce houses for the children, games and prizes, a disc-jockey and continuous live entertainment on stage. Powers Health offers hip and knee pain presentation

Join Jonathan Edgington, MD, and Michael Knesek, MD, for “Get Moving with Mako,” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 2 at Powers Health Rehabilitation Center, 10215 Broadway, Crown Point. The fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons will discuss new technology for hip and knee replacement, including Mako SmartRobotics,® which transforms the way joint replacement surgery is performed. The Mako System uses a virtual 3D model to allow surgeons to personalize each patient’s surgical plan so there is a clear course of action for the implant.
