Oak Lawn police said two juveniles were charged following a fight Friday at a high school football game during which several cheerleaders from Oak Lawn Community High School were attacked, according to officials.
District 229 Superintendent Shahe Bagdasarian told families in a district Facebook post he was writing to inform them “about a serious incident that occurred” during the school’s away game Friday at Richards High School, 10601 Central Ave., Oak Lawn.
“During halftime, a verbal and physical altercation broke out, initiated by an individual who is not” a District 229 student, Bagdasarian wrote in the post. “Several of our cheerleaders were unfortunately attacked, Oak Lawn Police and other law enforcement immediately intervened to remove all individuals that were causing conflict.”
The superintendent told families in the post that “numerous students and parents were removed from the game. At no time were any weapons involved, nor were there any major injuries, contrary to some reports on social media.”
“We are actively investigating the incident to identify any” district students involved, “and I assure you that appropriate consequences will be enforced in accordance with our school and district policies,” the superintendent wrote.
Police said that there was a fight at the game involving juveniles in the visitor stands of Richards, and that two juveniles were arrested at the scene Friday night.
It was not immediately clear what the juveniles were charged with, or if they attended either Oak Lawn or Richards high schools.
