Aurora police investigate fatal hit-and-run car crash

The Aurora Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash on the city’s southeast side that left an Aurora man dead Sept. 21, and officials are asking for the public’s help to locate the driver who fled the scene.

On Sept. 21 at around 5:20 a.m., the Aurora Police Department and Aurora Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of Ogden Avenue and South Farnsworth Avenue after a crash between a gray 2000 Honda Civic and a black 2003 Infiniti FX45, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

Officials said in the release that a preliminary investigation indicates the Infiniti was traveling eastbound on Ogden Avenue at a high rate of speed and failed to stop for a red light. The Honda, which was traveling southbound on Farnsworth Avenue with a green light, was unable to avoid the collision and was hit by the Infiniti, the release said.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver of the Infiniti exit the vehicle after the crash and run away northbound on Farnsworth Avenue, officials said.

The Honda’s driver, Ramiro Moreno, 43, was unresponsive and transported to Rush Copley Medical Center by Aurora Fire Department paramedics, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:06 a.m., the release said.

Aurora Police Department patrol and K-9 units conducted a search of the area but were unable to locate the driver of the Infiniti, according to the release. The area remained closed for several hours as investigators from the Aurora Police Traffic Division worked to reconstruct the accident, officials said.

As of Thursday afternoon, the crash is still under active investigation by APD’s Traffic Division, according to a police spokesperson. Officials are urging anyone with information to contact the Aurora Police Traffic Division at 630-256-5330 or email tips@aurora.il.us.
