Northbrook home in the 1989 film ‘Uncle Buck’ listed for just under $1.4M

A 3,549-square-foot Georgian-style house in Northbrook that had a prominent role in the 1989 film “Uncle Buck” came on the market in August for just under $1.4 million.

The house was used for a party scene in “Uncle Buck,” and its exterior is shown as a car driven by the titular character, played by the late John Candy, drives to a party, looking for his niece. Built in the early 1940s and located in Northbrook’s Highlands neighborhood, the four-bedroom house has 3-1/2 bathrooms, three fireplaces, a covered front porch, hardwood floors, an open floor plan and a living room with oversized windows and floor-to-ceiling built-ins.

Other features include a large dining room with a fireplace, a sunroom, a family room with skylit and vaulted ceilings, and an all-white kitchen with a large center island and breakfast bar, along with stainless steel appliances. The home also has a library/office with pocket doors, a second office on the upper level and a primary bedroom suite with two closets, a bathroom with dual vanities, a glass-enclosed shower and a spa.

The house’s lower level has 9-foot ceilings, recreation, game and play areas, and a separate workroom. Outside on the 0.4-acre property are a brick walkway, a brick patio and professional landscaping.

The late filmmaker John Hughes, who wrote and directed “Uncle Buck,” grew up in Northbrook, about a mile away. In fact, a five-bedroom, 3,058-square-foot house on Shannon Road that Hughes’ parents once owned just sold in February for $735,000.

“Besides being a hand-picked neighborhood by John Hughes, it’s a house meant for entertaining, and it’s been beautifully expanded, and one room flows into the next, as evidenced by all the people who could fit in the house from the movie’s party scene,” listing agent Nancy Gibson of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate told Elite Street. “It’s just a magnificent spot with a giant location in the heart of town. If ‘Uncle Buck’ can party here, I guess you can too.”

The home had an $18,965 property tax bill in the 2023 tax year.
