PNW offers admissions information event

Purdue University Northwest invites prospective college students and their families to attend Preview PNW from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hammond campus, 2200 169th St., Hammond. Free and open to anyone interested in attending PNW, the event provides valuable information about the university’s academic programs, admissions process and paying for college. Preview PNW features both a student and parent panel where visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions. A guided campus tour includes visits to state-of-the-art classrooms, hands-on laboratories, collaborative workspaces and campus housing. Complementary refreshments and lunch will be provided for all attendees. Admissions counselors and financial aid professionals will be available throughout the day to answer questions and assist in the application process. Application fees will be waived for prospective students who attend an admissions presentation and complete an application during the event. Registration is encouraged at pnw.edu/preview.

Purdue Extension to host Fall Tool Maintenance and Farm Tour

Purdue Extension-Lake County will host a Fall Tool Maintenance and Farm Tour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Brothers Keeper Community Garden, 2190 Broadway, Gary. Street parking will be available along 22nd Avenue. This program is part of the Purdue Extension urban farming internship, hosted by The Gary Food Council and Ancient Mystics and sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Waste Reduction District to hold last collection of season

The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County will host their final Household Hazardous Waste and tire collection of the season from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 E. Division Road, Valparaiso. Participants are asked to enter at Gate 3. Residents can safely dispose of products containing corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive substances. Common household hazardous waste items include anti-freeze, motor oil, batteries (household and automotive), fluorescent bulbs, oil-based paints, deck stains, pool chemicals, pesticides and household smoke detectors. This event will include a tire collection. Residents can bring four tires under 20 inches for free. Tires over 20 inches are subject to a fee. Tires with or without rims are accepted. Gary Library offers Tech Time, Jazz Sunday, Fall Fest

The public is invited to attend these upcoming October programs at the Gary Public Library’s Main Library, 220 W. Fifth Ave. Tech Time in the MakerSpace for October includes Open Lab from 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays; Arts from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday and Wednesdays; Sewing from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; Small Circuits from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays; and 3D Printing from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays. The TechMobile will be at the Woodson Branch, 501 S. Lake St., from Noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Oct. 23; and at the Kennedy Branch, 3953 Broadway, from Noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 15. Jazz Sunday will take place at 3 p.m.  Oct. 20 featuring the Lakeside Jazz Mob, Judy Emeline, vocals; Reginald Johnson, bass; Willie Coleman, sax and vocals; Edward Holmes, trumpet and vocals; Gerald Matthew, sax and flute; Willie Ray Jackson, guitar; Lauren McPhee, drums; and William Lamme, keyboards. Free admission and parking. Entrance through north parking lot side only. Doors open at 2:30pm, limited seating. Concerts are co-sponsored by the Greater Gary American Jazz Association. Fall Fest 2024 will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Main Library with an afternoon of fun, food, candy and games. Many community organizations will be on hand at the event. YWCA of NWI to Host Circle of Friends Gala

The YWCA of Northwest Indiana will host its annual Circle of Friends Gala Oct. 24 at the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, 5400 W. 29th Ave., Gary. The event will start promptly at 6 p.m. Samantha Chatman of ABC 7 Chicago will serve as the celebrity host. The funds raised for the Circle of Friends Gala will support programming and improvements to the facility, which is more than 25 years old, and is the only YWCA in Northwest Indiana. Attendees will enjoy dinner, dancing, raffles, live music and networking. Music will be provided by DJ N 4 Red. Organizers also will honor several individuals who have shown extraordinary support to the YWCA of NWI. The award recipients are as follows: Chareice White, CEO of ECIER Foundation; Era Twyman, former executive director of the Gary Literacy Coalition; Ida Gillis, former director of Affirmative Action at Indiana University Northwest; and Curtis Whittaker, CEO of Whittaker and Company, PLLC. In addition, organizers will present the inaugural Earline Rogers Trailblazer Award in honor of the late former state senator and YWCA board member emerita, Earline Rogers. This prestigious award will be presented to Cynthia Powers, former YWCA board president and a dedicated community stalwart. New this year is a generous matching grant from the Legacy Foundation, Inc.
