Letter: ‘The Park Ridge-Niles District 64 Elementary School referendum is a critically needed investment’

We have lived in District 64 for over fifty years and like many of you, we lived here for one big reason: the quality education provided to our two kids at Field Elementary and Lincoln Jr. High [schools].

They both received the great educations we expected and went on to great success at Maine South, the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), Notre Dame for graduate studies, and in their professional careers.

Like many of you, we have always believed that educating a child is not an expense but an investment in their future and your YES vote for the D64 Elementary School referendum on the November 5 ballot, which focuses on safety, security, and classroom modernization needs, is arguably the most important investment ever proposed in the history of D64.

With its passage, D64 will continue to provide the high-quality education we all want for our kids. Without a YES vote, the fundamental character of that high quality education and the community itself will change in unknown ways.

We have done our due diligence on the money being asked for and believe every dollar will be used for the basic needs that quality education here in D64 requires. There is no fluff. The spending details and videos on the D64 website underscore the importance and seriousness of a YES vote.

Respectfully,

Mike and Karen Shields
Niles
