U-46 high school marching band showcase set for Wednesday
Marching bands from School District U-46’s five high schools will hold a musical showcase at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Streamwood High School’s Millennium Field, 701 W. Schaumburg Road.
The evening will feature a 15-minute performance by each band, according to a news release. Admission is free. Spectators should use the entrance closest to Sutton Road to park in the student lot and enter through the gate closest to the ticket booth.
Order of appearance will be Streamwood, Elgin, Larkin, Bartlett and South Elgin.
Free flu shots will be available Oct. 12 at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin and Oct. 19 at the Hanover Township Senior Center in Bartlett. (AP)
Free flu shots being offered in Elgin and Bartlett
State Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, is partnering with Ascension Health to offer free flu shots at two locations over the next two weeks.
The events will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Hanover Township Senior Center, 240 Route 59, Bartlett.
Flu shots will be available for adults 18 and older, according to a news release.

Elgin Public Museum holding Monster Bash fundraiser Saturday
The Elgin Public Museum’s Monster Bash Halloween fundraiser will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Heritage Ballroom at the Ed Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.
The evening will include dinner, drinks, music, dancing, games, raffles, silent auctions and other activities, according to a post on the museum’s social media pages. Wearing costumes is suggested but not required.
Tickets are $50 for individuals, $90 for couples and $350 for tables for eight.

South Elgin Fire District planning Saturday open house
The South Elgin Fire District’s family-friendly open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Station 1, 1090 W. Spring St.
This year’s fire prevention theme is, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you,” according to a social media post for the event.
Attractions will include vehicle extrication demonstrations; a touch-a-truck area; helicopter tours; a comfort animal; fire extinguisher demos; free children’s eye exams, courtesy of the Elburn Lions Club; and activities, games and giveaways.

Kane County holding Native American women history program
Kim Sigafus, an Ojibwe folklorist and Native American author, will present a history of indigenous women of Illinois, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Barbara Belding Lodge in Brewster Creek Forest Preserve, 6N921 Route 25, St. Charles.
Sigafus will talk about such women as Blackhawk’s wife, Singing Bird, and Hononegah, according to the Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s Facebook page. The program will explore the women’s day-to-day lives, including courting, marriage and child-rearing, the women’s roles in their husbands’ lives and how their lives affected the history of Illinois.
