Candidates file for 2025 Aurora city election

Some 17 candidates filed for the 2025 Aurora city election Monday, the first day candidate petitions can be filed.

Included among those filing were three candidates for mayor: incumbent Richard Irvin; Ald. John Laesch, at large; and Ald. Ted Mesiacos, 3rd Ward.

Filers for the three were in line at 8 a.m. Monday, which means there will be a lottery to determine their ballot position.

All three had previously announced their intention to run for mayor. Two others, Judd Lofchie and Karina Garcia, have also announced their intention to run for mayor, but had not filed by 3 p.m. Monday.

Other candidates filed for the City Council Monday. They include:

— At large, Keith Larson and incumbent Ald. Ron Woerman. They also both filed at 8 a.m., so there will be a lottery to determine ballot position.

— 1st Ward, incumbent Dan Barreiro, who was appointed earlier this year to fill the position, and Hugo Saltijeral. There will be a lottery to determine ballot position.

— 2nd Ward. Filing first was Alfonso Santoyo, who will be first on the ballot, and second was incumbent Ald. Juany Garza.

— 4th Ward, Jeffrey Hansford, Jonathan Nunez and Jose Torres. They also will have a lottery for ballot position. In this ward, incumbent William Donnell has announced he will not seek re-election.

— 7th Ward, Alex Arroyo and Alex Banuelos, and their ballot position will be determined by lottery. Also filing is incumbent Ald. Brandon Tolliver, who will have the third ballot position. He was appointed to fill the vacant position following the death of previous 7th Ward Ald. Scheketa Hart-Burns, who died last year.

— 9th Ward, Giovanni Santana.

— 10th Ward, incumbent Ald. Shweta Baid.

The lottery for ballot positions will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 6 at City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place.

If five or more candidates file for any of the races, there will be a primary in February to whittle the candidates down to two. The general election is April 1, 2025.
