Teen critically wounded Wednesday night in East Chatham, 1 in custody

A person was taken into custody Wednesday night after an 18-year-old man was wounded in a basement apartment in the East Chatham neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 11:10 p.m., the victim was in a basement apartment with a group of people in the 7900 block of South Blackstone Avenue when a known gunman pulled out a handgun and opened fire, police said.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm and the left side of the head. He was taken in critical condition to UChicago Medicine. Police said a suspect was taken into custody.

Detectives were investigating.
