Habitat seeking military vets to help volunteer Saturday
Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley is looking for military veterans, their families and friends to volunteer to do construction work Saturday, Nov. 2, at a site in Elgin.
Veteran Build is hosted by Habitat for Humanity Chicagoland through local affiliates, said Victoria Vlazney, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley volunteer coordinator. The event helps benefit Habitat’s veterans’ programs.
The Northern Fox Valley affiliate has a crew of 10 working on a project Friday but is still seeking volunteers to work from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on Habitat’s new construction site at 576 Owasco Ave. in Elgin.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and 16- and 17-year-olds need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Lunch and an event t-shirt will be provided.

ECC taking part in Illinois Community College Feed the Need drive
Nonperishable food items can be dropped off through Saturday, Nov. 30, at Elgin Community College’s student life office, Building B, Room B173, as part of the Illinois Community College Board’s Feed the Need food drive.
The campaign is a friendly competition between all Illinois community colleges to see who can collect the most to combat hunger and support friends, peers and classmates who are experiencing food insecurity, according to a Facebook post.

Elgin Image Award winners announced by Elgin chamber
The Enhancing Elgin Committee of the Elgin Area Chamber’s Elgin Development Group has recognized a number of people and organizations with the 2024 Elgin Image Awards.
The honor spotlights those who are creating a positive impact in Elgin, according to Denise Raleigh, co-chair of the Enhancing Elgin Committee and Gail Borden Public Library spokeswoman.
Elgin Image Awards recipients for 2024 were:
- Excellence in DEI or Building Equity: Diana Palacios, outreach associate, Oak Street Health;
- Creating a Difference Groups/Organization or Business: Finishing Well and the Elgin Community College Center for Civic Engagement;
- Professional Rockstar: Ursula (Ula) Borodzinska, owner of the Martini Room, and Realtor Paul Bednar;
- Game Changer Projects: Dementia Friendly Elgin Area and YouthBuild Elgin;
- Volunteers Extraordinaire: Christine Awe, Scott Savel, Clare Ollayos and Jeanette Mihalec.

Trunk-or-treating being offered Thursday at Ecker Center
A trunk-or-treating event is being held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, in the parking lot for the Ecker Center for Behavioral Health, 1845 Grandstand Place in Elgin.
Local residents and businesses will be handing out candy and other treats from the backs of vehicles, according to an Instagram post for the event.
